Here's some pages from the upcoming Heroes Volume One -- a hardcover book collection of the online comics from the first season. In keeping with our designs for the 9th Wonders website and other work for the show, we based the interior look on classic silver age comics, including aging the pages as if the comics have been around for years.
Since each of the 34 stories had credits for writer, artist, etc, the credits pages had the potential to become a huge, boring, unreadable list. So I dug out some old Spidey comics and hit upon the idea of presenting them as pages of those old classified ads for x-ray specs and whatnot. As usual, "Mostly Happy Clip Art" books one and two were an invaluable source for the illustrations.
We extended the "old comic" idea throughout the book, with the introduction as a "Bullpen Bulletins" page, and interview at the end as a letters column.
For the chapter dividers, the editors wanted to use Tim Sale's art from the show, much of which has only been seen in small glimpses. I loved the idea, but wanted to present them as "covers" to 9th Wonders comics, which is presumably published by the artist character on the show. Some, like the eclipse, were easy, but it was a little trickier to follow the concept through on some of the horizontally-oriented pieces. It's a testament to Tim's (and colorist Dave Stewart's) artistic skills that I could crop and zoom however I needed to, and they always looked great.
