Secret Invasion

Here's a logo we designed for Marvel's latest mega-massive-monstrous-sized crossover event. "Something paranoid" was all the guidance editor Tom Brevoort gave us, so I assembled a bunch of different ideas pretty quickly, thinking about top secret dossiers, top secret military stamps, that sort of thing. Most of them ended up somewhere pretty predictable.
Surprisingly, they came back and said, no, they were hoping for something pulpy and more comic-booky, which led to the second set of three. Much to our delight, they chose the top one, which featured a font we'd just released called StickyFingers, which gave it a nice bit of high-profile exposure right away.
Once the logo was finished, they asked us us work up some topstraps and a corner box that could be used on upcoming covers to promote the series before it was officially announced. Amazingly, they again chose our favorite, the bottom set with the letters of the tagline as "bullet points" between the letters of Secret Invasion. The corner boxes were a little trickier, as they wanted to tease the fact that the Skrulls were the ones invading without making it too obvious. Miraculously, they liked our favorite, with "Who Do You Trust" knocked out of the silhouette. It's not often a client goes in exactly the direction you hope, but then that Tom Brevoort is quite the editing genius.
Lastly, they asked for a "recap" page design for the beginning of each story to catch the reader up on what has happened so far. Writer Brian Bendis asked for something "non-earthly" but "not space font", which of course required us to hop in our trusty time machine and see how future civilizations would design recap pages. And that's what we came back with. Don't ask how they do it...
